After Top 5 hits, and sold out worldwide tours, the Fudge broke up. “Together, they make this a very special & unique project.”Įmerging in 1967 as a founding member, drummer and vocalist for the iconic psychedelic rockers, Vanilla Fudge, it was a matter of months before Appice was recognized as one of greatest drummers of all time. “Carmine Appice’s drumming prowess is a symphony of rhythm, where beats become an intricate tapestry combined with the talent and precision of Fernando Perdomo,” says Cleopatra Records President Brian Perera. The band did an East Coast and West Coast showcase, which were incredible. Collaborating with Carmine has been so much fun and this song is pure joy. Now, we want the world to discover it.”Īdds Fernando Perdomo: “I couldn’t be more excited about the ‘Drum City’ music video. Many critics and radio professionals have told us this record is very different and very special, and we feel the same. “Fernando and I would just bounce ideas back and forth amongst each other, and before we knew it, we had this album filled with some of the best material either of us have ever been involved with. “Like our first album, Energy Overload, much of this album was conceived, written and recorded on opposite sides of the USA, while everyone was still dealing with the impact of the Covid 19 epidemic,” says Carmine Appice, about the record. The two musicians played nearly all the instruments on the entire album with the exception of a few tracks which also featured an all star cast of guest musicians, among them: bassist Billy Sheehan, keyboardist Derek Sherinian, guitarist Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal, bassist Tony Franklin and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Haslip. The two musicians worked on opposite coasts of the US via a remote online recording process to complete the album. I’d love it.The duo’s sophomore album again focuses on the art of instrumental rock gems, performed mostly just by Fernando Perdomo and Carmine Appice. I’m friends with those guys, so who knows. I could get guys like Jeff Watson and maybe a couple new guys - maybe that guy in Greta Van Fleet (Jake Kiszka). I could get another track out of Bumblefoot. “Y’know what - if the budget’s there, I could do it,” he says. Cactus is recording a new album and is hatching plans for a 50th anniversary celebration during 2020 that may include a box set and a video release of the group’s performance at the Isle of Wight Festival.Īnd Appice says another volume of Guitar Zeus collaborations could be in the offing, too. He’s producing a young band called Kodiak and is also working on an unreleased Beck, Bogert & Appice live concert from the Rainbow in London. It’s great to vibe out and lock in with them on the solos.”Īs Guitar Zeus renews its presence in the world, Appice has a number of other projects on his plate. “And playing fretless guitar with Tony (Franklin) on fretless bass gets trippy. “It’s always a good musical time with Carmine,” Bumblefoot says. put some extra parts on it and that became ‘Mothers Space.'”

Then he went on the road with Sons of Apollo and it needed more work, so my mixer, Stevie D. “So I asked Bumblefoot if he would play on it, and he said he would and did.

“It had everything there except lead guitar,” Appice recalls. “Mothers Space,” according to Appice, was a song he started during the original Guitar Zeus sessions but did not finish. It’s real ear candy.”Īppice did take the reissue opportunity to create some new Guitar Zeus songs. We mixed it that way to make it fun, ’cause everybody is listening with ear buds these days. “There’s all sorts of tidbits and ear candy, things on the left side, right side. “If you listen to this with headphones on, it’s like a Beatles album,” Appice says. I just wanted to give this thing a good chance - finally.”Īnd Appice is confident the new, remastered incarnation of Guitar Zeus - which includes a version of Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy,” which the drummer co-wrote - is the best yet. I think it’s some of the best songs I’ve written, some of the best drumming I’ve done and some of the best production I’ve done. “These records never came out with any kind of support or any kind of notice. “This is what I always wanted to happen,” Appice - whose resume includes Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck Bogert & Appice, Blue Murder and King Kobra and a tenure with Rod Stewart’s band - tells Billboard.
